The Community of Riverside

Located in Riverside County. Riverside is east of Orange County and Los Angeles and is serviced by two interstate highways (I-10 and I-15/215) and two major freeways (Route 91 and Route 60) which connect Riverside to Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

The first known explorations of the Riverside area were in the Fall of 1774. Captain Juan Bautista de Anza and a group of 34 soldiers came from Arizona looking for a good land route to the riches of California. After the dry and arid desert they had crossed, they came atop a mountain range to look down on a beautiful area they called "Valle de Paraiso - Valley of Paradise." There were local Indians who resided here who were peaceful, farming people.

The presence of March Field, now March Air Reserve Base, has been an important aspect of Riverside since World War I. Another of the community's defining institutions has been the Citrus Experiment Station, which started in 1907 and expanded in the 1950s into a general campus of the University of California, Riverside.

Riverside has a "strong city manager" form of government. Authority resides in a very involved, seven-member city council, advised by the mayor. Riverside is increasingly recognized as the legal, financial, and educational leader in the Inland Empire.
