Palm Springs is located in Riverside County surrounded by the San
Jacinto Mountains to the west, the Little San Bernardino Mountains
to the east and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south.
Palm Springs was originally known as Agua Caliente (Spanish for "Hot
Water"). In 1863, the area was chosen as a stop on the stagecoach
line from Los Angeles to the New Mexico Territory. By the 1880's,
it was becoming a residential community. John G. McCallum was the
first permanent white settler in the area. Incorporation for Palm
Springs was voted for on April 1, 1938 and passed. Palm Springs
became a city! The

Palm Springs is known as a beautiful oasis in
the desert. It is widely used as a fashionable winter resort. There
are many
fine
golf courses in the area, as well as a community college and
a botanical garden. A well-attended attraction is the Palm Springs
Aerial Tramway, which whisks riders to the top of Mt. San Jacinto
(3301m/10,831 ft) and the cool mountain air. Near the city, and
in fact, a portion of the community is the Agua Caliente Indian
Reservation.
