The Community of Indio
Indio is located in Riverside County and shares
the Coachella Valley with International resort destinations as
Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, and La Quinta.
Early inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes. They
lived mostly around the oases and the Whitewater River. It wasn't
until the late 1700's that the explorations from Mexico and Spain
began. Though more settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800's,
the native tribes were not affeccted greatly by the influx of new
people. In the mid-1800's, many more people arrived and Indian
reservatons were created. Railroad lines were built, depots were
built and towns began. Indio began with a depot in the 1870's.
The area was first called Indian Wells but was changed to Indio
in 1877. The site plan was filed in 1888 and in 1893, Indio became
a township in the new Riverside County.
The geography for Indio is an area known as
the Salton Sink. It was an area cut off from the Gulf of California
long ago. The area
